How to Play

Mahjong Solitaire Rules

The goal is simple: clear every tile from the Turtle layout by matching open pairs. A tile is open when no tile sits on top of it and at least its left or right side is free.

Rule 1: match the same Mahjong tiles, not different tile families Rule 2: tiles cannot be matched when another tile covers them Rule 3: tiles must be free from the left or right side Rule 4: season and flower tiles can be matched within their families

Know the Tile Families

Most tiles match by exact symbol: numbers, bamboos, dots, winds, and dragons. Flowers and seasons work as family matches instead of exact copies.

Strategy

Play the Turtle Board Smarter

Open the Tall Stacks

Prioritize pairs that uncover higher layers. Clearing top tiles early creates more open matches and prevents the board from locking.

Protect Flexible Tiles

Flowers and seasons match within their own families. Save them when possible because they can solve awkward late-board positions.

Check Both Sides

A tile is only playable when its left or right side is free. Before matching an obvious pair, see whether another pair opens more space.

Use Hints Carefully

Hints do not cost points before your first match. After the game starts, each new hinted pair can reduce your score.

Scoring

Score, Timer, and Leaderboard

Each pair gives a base score. Fast consecutive matches and repeated tile families can add bonuses, while hints after the first successful pair reduce your score. Repeating the same hint does not create another penalty.

The 10-minute timer starts only after your first successful pair. At the end, the game reports your completion percentage, remaining tiles, and whether your score qualifies for the leaderboard.

FAQ

Mahjong Solitaire Questions

Is this the same as four-player Mahjong?

No. Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player matching puzzle that uses Mahjong-style tiles, but it does not use the rules of four-player Mahjong.

Why can I see a tile but not select it?

The tile may still be blocked. It must have no tile on top and must have either its left or right side open.

Can every board be solved?

The game builds a solvable Turtle layout, but choices still matter. Removing pairs in the wrong order can leave no open matches.

How do flower and season tiles match?

Flower tiles can match any other flower tile. Season tiles can match any other season tile. They do not need identical artwork.
